Annular external fixator
The annular external fixator can completely or partially wrap around the arm, leg or foot being treated. These retainers consist of two or more rings that are joined together by struts, wires, or pins.
An external fixator is a metal device that is attached to the bones of an arm, leg, or foot with threaded pins or wires. These threaded pins, or wires, are threaded through the skin and muscles, inserting into the bone.
The majority of the device is located outside the body, which is why it is called an external fixator. Many people only need to use one external fixator, but some people need two or more external fixators.
